Witch of Trees - New piece, finally.
My Bloody Valentine - ‘You Made Me Realise’.
My Bloody Valentine are unquestionably one of the most influential musical acts of the last thirty years. Formed in the early 80s in Dublin by Colm Ó Cíosóig and Kevin Shields they came to be shoehorned in to the “Shoegazing” scene by lazy journalists, but their sound is too radical to be easily defined.
.
Having been signed by Alan McGee in the late 80s, who believed them to be the “Irish Hüsker Dü” they went on to release a number of critically acclaimed EPs and two landmark acclaimed albums, Isn’t Anything in 1988 and the iconic Loveless in 1991 before retiring from the limelight in the mid-90s.
.
The myths surrounding this release and the band’s principle songwriter Kevin Shields are manifold, from the recording costs of Loveless costing hundreds of thousands and nearly bankrupting Creation Records through to Shields’ bizarre reclusive behavior. The truth of course is that Creation went on to become one of the most successful independent labels in the UK, and the cost of Loveless was approximately the same as the label’s other major release that year - Primal Scream’s Screamadelica. Equally Kevin Shields has continued to be involved in a number of creative endeavours since the band went on hiatus, working on songs for the acclaimed Sofia Coppola film Lost In Translation and collaborating with artists like Patti Smith, Yo La Tengo and Placebo.
.
My Bloody Valentine were sonic pioneers, and stood at the convergence of alternative rock and the avant garde. Their music sounded like nothing that had gone before. Loveless in particular is a breathtaking piece of work exploring the outer reaches of a guitar’s capabilities – it’s no surprise that 20 years later the album is still influencing a new generation of musicians from The Horrors to Radiohead.
.
‘You Made Me Realise’ is an early single and highlight of their concerts, famed for the nigh-on unlistenable middle part which the band have been known to play for upwards of fifteen minutes live – this has been known to stimulate hallucinations in crowds.

Hey! Thanks!! It’s about half & half … If it’s black & white I tend to ink on paper, and if it’s colour I’ll do a lot of the work in potatoshop! :)
